(New) Media Arts Practices and the Cultures of Medicine: Historical Perspectives, Contemporary Endeavours

Tamar Tembeck
The first part of this talk examines the rise of (new) media arts practices tied to medicine and/or illness in late twentieth-century Western art. A survey of works by artists Bob Flanagan, Mona Hatoum, Bill T. Jones, Orlan, Donald Rodney and Jo Spence will help to exhibit the ways in which the body is symbolically reconfigured in time and space through the use of new media resources. The second half of the talk investigates contemporary possibilities for the artistic use of new media in healthcare contexts. I will introduce my postdoctoral research project, ?Nosocomial Aesthetics,? on the practice of art in hospitals, and discuss the potential for using mobile and locative media as exhibition platforms in healthcare spaces.

The talk will be held in English language, however, the discussion is also possible in German.
